What Is the National Gambling Exclusion Register?
The National Gambling Exclusion Register is one of the headline protections of the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. It lets a person bar themselves from every GRAI-licensed operator with a single request, instead of self-excluding site by site. Licensed operators must connect to the register and refuse service to anyone on it.
The Critical Limitation Right Now
⚠️ It only covers GRAI-licensed operators
As of late 2026, the GRAI licenses remote betting only. That means the register can shut off licensed bookmakers — but it cannot yet block the offshore-licensed casinos most Irish players use, because those operators are outside the GRAI system until casino licensing opens. If you need to exclude from a specific casino today, use that casino’s own self-exclusion tools as well.
How Self-Exclusion Works Today
- GRAI register — one request covers all licensed betting operators. Details via grai.ie.
- Per-site self-exclusion — every reputable casino offers account-level exclusion in its responsible gambling settings; it applies to that site only.
- Blocking software — tools like Gamban and BetBlocker work at device level and cover unlicensed sites too.
- Bank-level gambling blocks — several Irish banks and Revolut can block gambling transactions on your card.
